Art Care Instructions

Art Care Instructions: Keeping Your Piece Beautiful for Years to Come

Your artwork has been created with archival, professional-grade materials, but proper care will ensure it stays vibrant and safe for generations.

1. Handling Your Artwork

  • Always wash and dry your hands before touching the piece to avoid oils and dirt transferring to the paper.

  • Handle by the edges only — avoid touching the painted or inked surface.

  • If framing, let your framer handle it as minimally as possible.

2. Protect from Sunlight

  • While Derwent Inktense pigments are permanent and highly lightfast, all paper-based art is vulnerable to direct sunlight.

  • Hang your piece in a spot with indirect or diffused light to prevent fading or yellowing over time.

  • UV-protective glass or acrylic when framing is highly recommended.

3. Framing for Longevity

  • Use acid-free mats and backing boards to prevent paper discoloration.

  • Choose a sealed frame to protect against dust and moisture.

  • Leave a slight gap between the glass and the surface of the artwork to prevent sticking or smudging.

4. Environmental Care

  • Keep away from areas with high humidity (like bathrooms or kitchens) to avoid warping or mold growth.

  • Avoid extreme temperature changes — stable environments keep the paper and pigments happy.

5. Cleaning

  • Never use water or cleaners directly on the artwork.

  • Dust the frame lightly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth.

  • If the glass gets dirty, spray cleaner onto a cloth, never directly on the glass, to prevent seepage.

6. Storage (if not displayed)

  • Store flat in a portfolio or archival box, between sheets of acid-free tissue paper.

  • Keep in a cool, dry place away from light and fluctuating temperatures.

Why This Matters

  • Arches watercolor paper is 100% cotton and archival, built to last, but needs protection from environmental factors.

  • Derwent Inktense pigments are permanent once dry and water-activated, meaning they won’t smudge or fade with proper care.

  • Sakura Micron pens use fade-resistant, waterproof pigment ink that stays sharp and detailed for decades.
